SONGWRIGHTS APOTHECARY LAB, NEW YORK
As the “visual musician” in collaboration with singer-songwriter, Esperanza Spalding, we designed a space for her Lower East Side Songwrights Apothecary lab. It was critical to create a design that reflected the growth and inspiration that Esperanza invited into the space and that the design had little to no waste. We installed 50 mycelium blocks that flowered over the course of 12 days, as musicians, healers, and creative practitioners to create an album together. The mushrooms grew, released their spores, and eventually were eaten and the mycelium blocks composted at the Brooklyn Grange Rooftop farm. When the songs were completed, Esperanza and I worked together to design a series of jewelry made with recycled silver to correspond with each song, an alternative to the plastic record and CDS that are typically sold.
